033 The Barracudas - Down in the Boondocks

'Cover Songs' Part #4 : 'Down in the Boondocks'

45cat tells us : "Given away with issue 35 of Bucketfull Of Brains magazine." Released 1990 'Down in the Boondocks' Wikipedia sung by Billy Joe Royal

( B-side is 'Everybody's Talking' done by The Sneetches. It's not worth it to play it here IMHO ;-) )

032 Tich Turner's Escalator - Diana / Are You Wiv

'Cover Songs' Part #3 : 'Diana'

'Diana' by Tich Turner's Escalator was originally written by Paul Anka back in 1957 - details can be read here.

B-side : 'Are You Wiv'

031 Bethnal - We've Gotta Get Out Of this Place

'Cover Songs' Part #2 : 'We've Gotta Get Out Of this Place'

'We've Gotta Get Out Of this Place' released by Bethnal in 1978 is a cover version of the old Animals classic. Read the whole story here.

The B-Side 'The Outcome' you find here on Youtube and is a great tune. I remember first time a heard this song was on the 'Mod Pop Punk Archives' about 10 years ago.

(Btw: my favorite version of this song was done by the Angelic Upstarts, here to hear on Youtube.)

030 Mystere V's - Shake Some Action

Let's start with a series of cover versions now.

'Cover Songs' Part #1 : 'Shake Some Action'

First one is Flamin' Groovies' 'Shake Some Action' of the done by the Mystere V's.

(B-side of this record is not soo interesting I think, so I skipped to upload it.)

029 The Table - The Magical Meon Of The Tropics

The second The Table track I post here is from their first single: 'The Magical Meon Of The Tropics'. The guitar solo is definitely too long!

A-side you also find on Youtube : 'Do Standing Still'.

028 The Table - The Road Of Lyfe

Ok let's come up with two The Table B-Sides. First one is 'The Road Of Lyfe', B-Side of their second single. As you can read here on www.punk77.co.uk the Table releases are characterized by a bizarre and psychedelic style. So this record doesn't belong to my favs but it is interesting to have heard it anyway.

The A-side 'Sex Cells' you find here on Youtube or download the whole 7inch from www.kbdrecords.com.

027 Sad Among Strangers - Sparks Fly Upwards / A Better View Of Baxter / The Gangs

Here you have three great melody PowerPop - Post-Punk - New-Wave tunes which come along with an odd treble voice : 'Sparks Fly Upwards' / 'A Better View Of Baxter' / 'The Gangs'. Enjoy !

Discogs shows me there are some other SAS releases. How do these records sound like ? - I don't know.

026 Dead Fingers Talk - This Crazy World / The Boyfriend

How fu***** cool is the 'The Boyfriend' ?!? The more mid tempo A-Side 'This Crazy World' is good as well.

For me Dead Fingers Talk are not comparable with other bands. DFT did find their own unique style. Go and find the 'Storm the Reality Studios' album (... ok here you have it :)). You'll get great melody mid tempo gems like 'New Directions' and 'Everyday' and some punky DFT-style tunes. The 'Storm the Reality Studios .. Plus' CD release comes with extra tracks like the killer 'Only You'.

025 John Milton + Glass Torpedoes - Unreal The Real / Running Wild

Ok, this post is more a Glass Torpedoes post than a John Milton + Glass Torpedoes post. I love the early more punky/powerpoppy Glass Torpedoes stuff, which is :
'Someone Different', 'Heart Surgery', 'Morning, Noon And Night' (1979).
Additionally, at music-isms.blogspot.com you get the Glass Torpedoes Peel Session (1980). Not good quality but great catchy tunes ('Forced a Smile', 'Something', 'Tall Stories', 'This Is The End'). In my opinion the first three pieces are real unknown PowerPop gems !!!

The later 'Unreal The Real' is more Postpunk, not soo interesting for me but I post it anyway. Maybe this will help you in case you see it on Ebay and you are thinking about to bid for it or not (just as I did ;)).

A-Side : Unreal The Real
B-Side : Running Wild

024 Tin Huey - Sister Rose

Here is the B-side 'Sister Rose' for the great A-side tune 'English Kids'.

On their website you will find some new material as mp3s.

I never heard stuff from their earlier records and don't know where to find it. So if you have something, let me know ...

(Oh I just realized there is another B-side posting - so enjoy the better sound quality ...)

023 Warm Jets - Sticky Jack / Shell Shock

I really like 'Big City Boys' from their second 7inch which can be found on the 'Teenage Treats Vol.2' compilation (download it from the excellent girlsfromtahiti.blogspot.com blog). But this record I don't hear very often.

A lot of details about the Warm Jets you will found on the 45revolutions.blogspot.com blog.

A-Side: 'Sticky Jack'
B-Side: 'Shell Shock'

022 Blue Mist - Rozanna / The Missing End

How cool it can sound if teenagers make music you know from the Groovies, Eater and the belgian Kids. These kids are 14, 14, 16 and 13 years old. Check it here : 'Rozanna' / 'The Missing End'.

Already posted here with a press release, if you don't believe me ;-).

021 The Cartoons - Dark Alleys

Mmhh I'm not certain - can we actually compare A and B side ? Often I feel 'Dark Alleys' is even better than the A-side ? Isn't it ? ;-) No ! Just as well ! Brilliant record !

(Ever heard the second single 'Beep Beep love' / 'Thomas Cadillac' ? Currently I'm not sure but I think I have not !)

020 The Citizens - TV Woman

Great tune ! A rockin' verse changes into a pop refrain ! Great ! WHY this is the B-side ?!! I do not really like the A-side, ~~so I skipped to record and upload it.~~ If you are interested, you will get the mp3s on the www.kbdrecords.com blog.

019 The Freshmen - Bombing Run

Let's proceed with a rocking tune by the Freshmen : 'Bombing Run'. This is the B-Side of the well known A-Side : 'You've Never Heard Anything Like It', which has a complete different style.

018 The Trend - Polly And Wendy / The Family Way

Here is the second The Trend single released in 1980 : 'Polly And Wendy' / 'The Family Way'.

The third one you can download on the brilliant 'Short Sharp Kick In The Teeth' blog: 'I Dont Anymore' / 'Routines'.

All three singles together are great stuff and damn(!) back in 1980 MCA records would have had to release a The Trend album named 'This is killer punky PowerPop!'.

The fourth one ('This Dance Hall Must Have A Back Way Out' / 'Fiction, Love and Romance') I have never heard ... so if you have it (in some kind of digital form), let me know ...

017 The Trend - Teenage Crush

This is the A-Side of the first single by The Trend - 'Teenage Crush'; released 1979. Both sides are great tunes, check the B-Side here: 'Cool Johnny'. Again Bored Teenagers gives you some more info.

If you wanna hear the second single, take a look at my next post ...

016 Varicose Veins - Incredible EP

Pressed with a quantity of 200 ! Bored Teenagers gives you some more info (my footage is from the reissue ;-) on Warp Records, released: 2000).

A-Side (1): 'Geographical Problem' (Buy the reissue ;-))
A-Side (2): 'Just Because' (Buy the reissue ;-))
B-Side: 'Hiroshima'

015 New Math - Angels

I remember the first time I heard the PowerPop perl 'Die Trying' is about ten years ago and it was at the fantastic 'Punk Mod Pop Archives' site. Here you have the B-Side 'Angels'. A nice mid tempo PowerPop number ! Enjoy !

014 The Thrillers - I'm a Casanova / Meat Eater

This is a killer ! 'I'm a Casanova' is such catchy tune. From the day I heard it the first time it was in my head for about a week ! To memorize the lyrics is quite easy, so have it in your mind and sing this song along with your mates every time you hanging around in a bar or club (as the Thrillers did it I guess!). B-Side is here.

013 Julie & Gordon - Gettin' It Together

To make it complete and to let Julie and Gordon do some more fun, here the B-side of the second single of Julie & Gordon : "J-J-Julie (Yippee Yula)" (A-Side you find here).

"Gettin' It Together" is more 'making fun' than a real song, but after a minute you can hear a groovy tune that can let you start moving your body to it (if you are currently in a happy mood ;)).

012 Julie & Gordon - I'm So Happy To Know You

I LOVE that song : "Gordon's Not A Moron" !!! And I LIKE the B-Side "I'm So Happy To Know You" !

"Gordon Is Not A Moron" on the Pogo label was the answer to the Jilted John song "Gordon Is A Moron". Read the story here?.

011 The Secret - Handle A Vandal

"Handle A Vandal" is the (much better !!!) B-Side of The Secret's cover version for the well known Cliff Richard song "The Young Ones".

010 The Boyfriends - Saturday Night

This is the B-side of the Boyfriends' "I'm In Love Today" 7inch. Great tune ! More infos and downloads to find on the Powerpopcriminals blog.

009 White Heat - Finished With The Fashions

"Finished With The Fashions" is the A-Side ( Yes! It is ! ;-) ) of the second White Heat single. Much more known is the B-Side "Ordinary Joe" which can be heard here. (I think the reason is that the sound and its structure is very different from the B-side and doesn't follow the common way of a typical PowerPop tune, but if you are into it you will like it !!)

I just saw that some has posted the fantastic "In The Zero Hour" LP on the theresnoreturning.blogspot.com blog. Download it !! Play it !! Enjoy it !! Great stuff !
